Sanofi-Aventis has acquired Medley for 153 million euros (137 million pounds).
The Paris-listed company asserted the takeover would allow it to build on growth platforms, improve sales and extend its pharmaceutical portfolio in emerging markets.
Medley is based in Brazil and Heraldo Marchezini from Sanofi-Aventis asserted the agreement will strengthen the link between the latter and South America.
“It illustrates our commitment towards the people of Brazil by providing access to medicines and answering patients’ needs with a broader and well-adapted product portfolio,” he remarked.
Subject to certain conditions, the closing of the transaction is expected to occur in the second quarter of this year.
Last month, Sanofi-Aventis released findings of a study that showed Plavix, when taken with aspirin, could significantly reduce major vascular events by 11 per cent in patients with atrial fibrillation who can not take oral anticoagulant medication.
Chief medical officer of the business Jean-Pierre Lehner asserted the results would be of “major interest” for those with the condition.
The pharmaceutical company aims to provide medicines, vaccines and healthcare solutions to various needs.
