Sanofi-aventis allies with UCSF on research collaborations

14th January 2011

Sanofi-aventis has entered into a pair of new research partnerships with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) that are designed to promote the discovery of innovative drugs.

The first of these collaborations will see the pharmaceutical company become the first industry partner for UCSF's Program for Breakthrough Biomedical Research, which provides funding for innovative scientific studies.

Sanofi-aventis will help to provide up to five of these grants a year and will assist in the selection of worthy proposals as part of a joint steering committee, while also funding a related annual research forum.

Meanwhile, the second partnership focuses on the field of oncology and will aim to accelerate the progress of cancer research projects to the clinical proof of concept stage.

Christopher Viehbacher, chief executive officer at Sanofi-aventis, said: "Joining forces with UCSF researchers emphasises Sanofi-aventis' commitment to establishing strong relationships and collaborations with the best innovators in the world."

Last month, Sanofi-aventis agreed a deal to purchase the rights to new diabetes drug delivery technology developed by Ascendis Pharma.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800342533-ADNFCR
