Sanofi-aventis appoints new research and development head

15th December 2010

Sanofi-aventis has selected Dr Elias Zerhouni as its new president of global research and development, effective as of the beginning of 2011.

Dr Zerhouni has acted as a scientific advisor to chief executive officer Christopher Viehbacher since 2009 and has played a key role in the recent reorganisation of the company's research and development model.

His promotion will see him reporting directly to Mr Viehbacher, while also becoming a member of Sanofi-aventis' executive and management committees.

Coinciding with this appointment, the firm's executive vice-president for research and development Dr Marc Cluzel will resign from his post, although he will continue to advise Dr Zerhouni as a scientific expert.

Mr Viehbacher said: "I am delighted that a world-renowned figure such as Elias is onboard to lead and drive our research and development organisation to ensure we make the maximum impact on health."

This comes in the same week that Sanofi-aventis extended its tender offer for all outstanding shares of fellow pharmaceutical company Genzyme.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800292332-ADNFCR
