Sanofi-Aventis MD to take new lead at ABPI

8th December 2005

The managing director of Sanofi-Aventis in the UK, Nigel Brooksby, will take on the role of president of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI), when current president Vincent Lawton steps down in April next year.

Commenting on his new role Mr Brooksby told the PharmaTimes: “With health services across Europe facing difficult times, it is essential that the pharmaceutical industry works in close co-operation with the government to ensure that patients get the best possible treatment.

“Health provision is a complex interaction involving patients, doctors, hospitals, clinics, medicines and other therapies. The pharmaceutical industry must work in partnership with all those involved – especially patients – to ensure that the treatment achieves the best, most appropriate for the individual concerned.”

From January 1st 2006, the ABPI will officially launch its new code of practice requiring firms to give information of possible adverse drug side effects within all promotional literature relating to their products. The relationship between professionals and companies will also be further restricted, placing regulations on perks such as travel and hospitality.

The code also includes a complete ban on pharmaceutical competitions, a reduction in the allowed number of pages of advertising, and greater disclosure into how drugs companies work with patient or public interest groups.

“With new government priorities, the modernisation of the NHS, and developments in innovative medicines, we have to break down communication barriers to ensure that the voice of all those taking part in the provision of healthcare is heard,” added Mr Brooksby.
