Sanofi-Aventis opens new vaccine facility

26th June 2008

A cutting-edge vaccine production centre has been opened to respond to a growing worldwide demand.

The 100 million euro (79.2 million pounds) facility at Val de Reuil in the north-west of France is highly automated and designed to be able to produce 20 vaccines.

It can also switch exclusively to one particular vaccine in the case of a pandemic emergency, such as that of H1N5 avian flu.

President and chief executive Wayne Pisano, who inaugurated the new production center, said: “The new facility will provide high-end production work environment for dedicated people who produce vaccines for the world.”

He went on to say that the world demand for vaccines is expected to double in the next eight years.

It has taken two years to build the facility and will be fully operational by the end of the year, subject to inspection and certification by the authorities.

About 100,000 people work for the company worldwide.
