Sanofi Aventis presents new formula to manage diabetes

12th June 2006

Sanofi-Aventis has presented the results of a new trial at the American Diabetes Association’s annual scientific session, demonstrating a new dosage formula that could have benefits for patients with type II diabetes.

Using two of its own diabetes drugs, Apidra and Lantus, the study compared patients using the standard but sometimes “difficult to use” carbohydrate counting method of managing blood glucose levels, with patients using a simple algorithm that adjusts to patients’ pre-mealtime glucose levels. The aim of the study was make sure the new algorithm method was as effective as carbohydrate counting.

No differences were between the effectiveness of the two methods was observed over 24-weeks, nor was there any difference in weight gained by patients. Adverse side-effects were also similar.

Richard M Bergenstal, executive director of the International Diabetes Centre, Park Nicollet Health Service in Minneapolis, commented: “This new dosing approach relies on a simple algorithm that allows patients to start with a fixed dose of mealtime glulisine and then adjust to target based on premeal glucose patterns.”

“This is an easy way to dose and adjust mealtime insulin that should meet the needs of many patients who are not prepared to undertake the equally effective but more complex carbohydrate counting method,” he added.

Sanofi-Aventis is the primary sponsor of Diabetes UK, a charity for people with insulin. It says that Lantus is the most prescribed insulin in the US. Last week, insulin competitor Novo Nordisk announced it was successful in getting the US’ International Trade Commission to investigate Sanofi-Aventis over possible patent infringement over its OptiClik insulin delivery system.
