Sanofi Pasteur inaugurates high-tech vaccine production facility

Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of sanofi-aventis, has announced the inauguration of a high-tech vaccination production facility to deal with rising worldwide demand.

The 100 million euros (50.2 million pounds) facility is located in Val De Reuil in north-west France incorporates recent technological advances to produce superior quality vaccines.

With the ability to produce vaccines against 20 diseases, the plant is part of 600 million euros invested by the company in France the past three years.

The site is designed to be switched to manufacturing pandemic influenza vaccine in the event of a human pandemic influenza once such a need is identified by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Wayne Pisano, president and chief executive officer of Sanofi Pasteur, said: “Sanofi Pasteur?s commitment to global health is exemplified by significant investments in vaccine production infrastructures.”

He added these efforts aim to meet a worldwide demand for vaccines forecast to double by 2016, while the new facility will provide a high-end production work environment for those involved in vaccine manufacturing.

Last month, Sanofi Pasteur announced plans to donate 60 million doses of the H5N1 influenza vaccine to the stockpile of the WHO over three years.
