Sartorius to acquire Essen BioScience to enhance cell analysis portfolio

10th March 2017

Sartorius has announced that it will be acquiring the US-based Essen BioScience for $320 million (263 million pounds) in cash.

The deal will provide Sartorius with access to Essen BioScience's bioanalytics solutions, thereby enabling the former to significantly expand its portfolio in this area.

One asset that Sartorius is particularly interested in is Essen's real-time, live-cell analysis platform, which it believes will perfectly complement its own IntelliCyt cell analysis products.

Joachim Kreuzburg, chief executive officer of Sartorius, commented: "This powerful technology offers important synergies with our IntelliCyt business. Going forward, Sartorius will be able to provide our customers with the broadest and, we believe, the most innovative portfolio for cell analysis in the industry."

The acquisition could also prove financially lucrative for Sartorius, with Essen anticipating sales revenues of around $60 million for 2017. Essen has its headquarters in Michigan and employs approximately 150 staff in the US, UK and Japan.
