Schering Plough and CAT are ‘the best places to work in UK

Schering-Plough and Cambridge Antibody Technology (CAT) have been voted as some of the best companies to work for in the UK, according to the Great Place to Work Institute.

The American-based pharmaceutical company, which has its UK headquarters in Welyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, was voted in at 39th place, while CAT was in 45th place. The results are based on the thoughts of the companies’ employees, who sent in surveys detailing their thoughts on their workplaces.

According to Pharmafocus, a monthly pharmaceutical news magazine, Schering-Plough was rated at 77 per cent for credibility, 73 per cent for respect, 74 per cent for fairness, 81 per cent for camaraderie and 80 per cent for pride.

Gordon Coutts, general manager of Schering-Plough UK, told the magazine: “This is the first time that we have taken part in the survey and we are thrilled to have been recognised in this way. The fact that the ranking is based primarily on responses to a survey carried out among employees is particularly pleasing.”

“Our people are the heart of our business and we are delighted that more than 78 per cent of our employees think that Schering-Plough is a best place to work,” he added.

CAT employs 290 members of staff. Peter Chambre, the company’s chief executive officer, has said he is proud to work at CAT. He remarked: “CAT’s employees are the core of the company and together they form a highly effective team.

“The success of the company is a tribute to their talent, dedication and enthusiasm, creating a culture within which individuals are supported and encouraged to achieve their full potential.”

Last month, AstraZeneca submitted a takeover offer for CAT, a monoclonal antibody research company, for 702 million pounds. The bid was recommended to shareholders by CAT’s board.
