Schering-Plough Animal Health announces Dieter Luetticken Award winner

8th April 2009

Schering-Plough Animal Health’s sponsored Dieter Luetticken Award 2008 has been given to Dr Ivo Classen.

He will be presented with 20,000 euros (17,951 pounds) during the seventh World Congress on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences on September 3rd in Rome.

Dr Classen has been recognised for a project he managed at the Central Veterinary Institute in the Netherlands developing an in vitro potency test for the routine quality control of inactivated Newcastle Disease Virus.

As an extra assay to release vaccines against the condition, the new method avoids using chickens and has been included in the European Pharmacopoeia monograph.

Chair of the jury Professor Hendriksen explained the new test is an “attractive alternative” to existing methods, “especially with regard to the objective of the European regulatory authorities to replace, reduce and refine the use of laboratory animals for production and quality control of immuno-biologicals.”

Based in Boxmeer in the Netherlands, Schering-Plough Animal Health offers a number of products that prevent, treat and control disease in farm and companion creatures.
