Schoolchildren ‘drinking sports drinks in large amounts despite dental risk’

28th June 2017

The majority of British schoolchildren are potentially putting their oral health at risk by drinking large quantities of sports drinks.

This is according to new research from Cardiff University and Cardiff Metropolitan University, which has indicated that 89 percent of schoolchildren drink these high-sugar acidic products, with 68 percent doing so regularly.

It was shown that 45.9 percent of children surveyed believe that sports drinks are aimed at people of all ages and activity levels – when in fact they are actually mostly aimed at adult athletes – while brands such as Lucozade Sport, Powerade and Gatorade were widely recognised.

The heavy consumption of these drinks comes despite the fact that 65 percent of respondents acknowledged that sports drinks can lead to tooth decay.

Responding to the findings, the British Dental Association (BDA) called on the government to include sports drinks under the remit of the sugar levy, and to place restrictions on how they are marketed and displayed, as many sellers often place them alongside regular soft drinks.

BDA chair Mick Armstrong said: "It's no accident that we are seeing such high levels of consumption among children. Cynical marketing is driving demand, and it is time government drew a line."
