Secretary welcomes Lord Sutherland review

30th April 2008

The Scottish government’s cabinet secretary for health and wellbeing, Nicola Sturgeon, has welcomed a review of free personal and nursing care (FPNC) by Lord Sutherland.

Commissioned by the country’s government, it aimed to study the total levels of funding for this policy and the distribution of such financing.

Lord Sutherland said in the report that the UK was “wrong” to take attendance allowance from Scotland’s budget.

According to Ms Sturgeon, he confirms the support of the free personal and nursing care scheme and its benefit to thousands or elderly people.

“I am very grateful to Lord Sutherland and to the other members of his independent group for this substantial and considered report,” she explained.

“We are committed to securing FPNC policy for the long-term and ensuring that it continues to deliver benefits to older people across Scotland.”

Ms Sturgeon is a member of the Scottish National Party and represents the Glasgow Govan area.
