Senior doctors warn Theresa May of impact of NHS winter pressures

Senior doctors have written to the prime minister to warn of the severe impact the current NHS winter pressures are having on patients.

In a letter to Theresa May, 68 senior emergency care doctors have warned that a lack of staff and funding means many hospitals are running out of beds, making it impossible to provide safe and effective care.

This means that patients are often having to sleep in makeshift wards set up in side rooms, with many having to wait for up to 12 hours before being seen, often remaining stuck inside ambulances for extended periods.

As a result, more than 120 patients a day are being managed in corridors in some hospitals, leading to premature deaths. At one point last week, 133 out of 137 hospital trusts in England were shown to have an unsafe number of patients on their wards.

Chris Hopson of NHS Providers raised concerns with BBC News that this marks the first time that the NHS has missed all of its key targets for accident and emergency performance, cancer care and planned operations across the UK.

Mr Hopson added: "We have reached a watershed moment where either we fund the NHS to the extent that is needed to meet those standards or – and this is absolutely not what we want – we abandon those standards."
