Shire forms new collaboration to aid diagnosis of rare diseases in children

21st February 2018

Shire has announced the formation of a new strategic alliance to facilitate the diagnosis of young patients living with rare diseases.

The company will partner with Microsoft and EURORDIS-Rare Diseases Europe to establish the Global Commission to End the Diagnostic Odyssey for Children, a multidisciplinary group of experts delivering creativity, technological expertise and commitment to this cause.

The aim will be to develop an actionable roadmap to minimise the diagnostic journey for rare diseases, as currently it takes around five years for rare disease patients to receive the correct diagnosis.

Work will commence in early 2018, with the Global Commission to gather input from patients, families and other expert advisors to gain additional key insights. A roadmap that encapsulates the findings of the commission's work will emerge in early 2019.

Dr Flemming Ornskov, chief executive officer at Shire, said: "This Global Commission is passionate about bringing forward new and personalised solutions in diagnostics and I'm confident our work will help to transform the lives of children living with a rare disease."
