Siemens Healthineers and Biogen to develop MRI applications for multiple sclerosis

19th January 2017

Siemens Healthineers has announced a new multiple sclerosis (MS)-focused technology alliance with Biogen.

The companies will work to jointly develop magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications to quantify key markers of MS disease activity and progression, including new T2 lesions and brain atrophy.

This collaboration will leverage Biogen's strong understanding of neurological and autoimmune conditions and Siemens Healthineers' expertise in medical imaging, with the aim of making it possible to generate research-quality data through routine clinical practice.

MRI scans are often used to support physicians in diagnosing MS by measuring disease activity and monitoring response to therapy. Currently, quantitative measurement techniques with the precision and sensitivity required for MS are typically only available in the research setting, but this collaboration could change this, providing enhanced data at the point of care.

Dr Christoph Zindel, senior vice-president of magnetic resonance imaging at Siemens Healthineers, said: "By bringing together the shared expertise of both Siemens Healthineers and Biogen in imaging and neurology, respectively, we seek to develop new measurement tools that meet the particular technical challenges of MS."
