Siemens Healthineers and Fraunhofer MEVIS announce research alliance

25th May 2017

Siemens Healthineers has announced a new research partnership with the Fraunhofer MEVIS Institute for Medical Image Computing.

The organisations will jointly develop artificially intelligent software systems to facilitate diagnosis and therapy decisions, incorporating advanced data integration, comprehensive databases and automatic recognition of patterns and regularities in data – also known as deep machine learning.

By doing so, these tools will be able to help physicians quickly select the best possible treatment approach for their patients, while minimising side effects.

The project is planned to run for four years and will include both research and joint commercialisation activities, with the aim of establishing a strong market presence for these new solutions.

Walter Maerzendorfer, president of diagnostic imaging at Siemens Healthineers, said: "Thanks to this research alliance and the merits of intelligent data integration, we take the next step towards evidence-based medicine."

Fraunhofer MEVIS is dedicated to creating software to aid image-supported early detection, diagnosis and therapy, with a focus on cancer as well as diseases of the circulatory system, brain, breasts, liver and lungs.
