Siemens Healthineers to expand US manufacturing facility

23rd December 2016

Siemens Healthineers has announced plans to spend $300 million (244.77 million pounds) to expand its laboratory diagnostics manufacturing and research and development facility in Walpole, Massachusetts.

To be spent over a four-year period, the money will be used to upgrade and expand its existing 500,000 sq ft complex, with renovations to the facility set to commence in the coming weeks.

Manufacturing, warehouse, office and lab space will all be upgraded during summer 2017, with at least 400 new positions set to be created as a result of the work.

Currently, the site manufactures assays that run on the Advia Centaur family of immunoassay instruments, and consumables for its molecular and blood gas testing instruments. It will also manufacture assays to run on the immunoassay module of the Atellica Solution, which is currently in development.

Siemens Healthineers anticipates that it may ultimately create up to as many as 700 new permanent jobs, bringing the total staff numbers at the site to between 1,300 and 1,600 by 2026.

Bernd Montag, chief executive officer of Siemens Healthineers, said: "The laboratory instruments and reagents developed and manufactured at the Siemens Healthineers Walpole facility impact patients and healthcare providers across the globe."
