Siemens Healthineers to purchased Epocal business from Alere
Siemens Healthineers has announced the acquisition of the Alere subsidiary Epocal, a move that will complete its blood gas portfolio.
Epocal is a developer and provider of point-of-care blood diagnostic systems for healthcare enterprises, including the Epoc blood analysis system, a handheld, wireless testing solution that provides blood gas, electrolyte and metabolite results in approximately 30 seconds.
Purchasing Epocal allows Siemens Healthineers to offer a comprehensive range of blood gas diagnostic tools, from a low-volume, single-use handheld device to a high-volume, multi-use benchtop solution.
Blood gas testing systems are an important component in critical care settings such as hospitals, clinics, emergency departments and pulmonary laboratories, and are therefore an important business area for the company.
Peter Koerte, president of point-of-care diagnostics at Siemens Healthineers, said: "The acquisition complements our existing offerings in the point-of-care diagnostics space, with a view to provide customers globally with a full range of blood gas solutions."
This transaction is subject to the completion of Abbott's acquisition of Alere, as well as routine regulatory approvals.
