Siemens launches neonatal bilirubin testing assay

20th January 2011

Siemens has launched a new bilirubin testing assay for newborn babies, which is designed for use with the RAPIDPoint 405 blood gas analyser.

The Neonatal Total Bilirubin test is being introduced outside the US after receiving CE Mark accreditation and is designed for use with RAPIDPoint systems utilising software version 3.7.

Using a small amount of blood, the device can provide test results in around 60 seconds, which can help clinical decisions to be made quickly.

This can be essential among newborns, with elevated bilirubin levels among this patient group often leading to conditions such as jaundice and kernicterus, which in turn can cause brain damage or autism.

A statement from Siemens said: "With one small blood sample, a full range of analytes can be measured including bilirubin, blood gases, electrolytes, glucose, total haemoglobin and other critical care parameters required to assess critically ill infants."

Earlier this month, the manufacturer launched new versions of its RAPIDPoint 300 series analysers, which offer additional quality control and compliance features.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800354828-ADNFCR
