Sir Andrew Witty to retire as GSK CEO

Chief executive of GlaxoSmithKline Sir Andrew Witty has confirmed that he is to retire on March 31st 2017.

This means the GSK board has a year in which to find a suitable successor, with both internal and external candidates set to be considered.

Sir Philip Hampton, chairman of GSK, commented: "Andrew’s retirement next year will represent the culmination of 32 years of service and leadership to GSK and the industry. 

"We will thank Andrew more formally for his tremendous dedication and contribution next year."

Sir Andrew added that after ten years as chief executive, he believes it is the right time for a new person to take over the reins.

"GSK is a very special company with an inspiring mission and many dedicated people," he said.
