Six million older adults ‘do not get ten minutes of walking each month’

24th August 2017

A new report from Public Health England has indicated that millions of UK adults are not getting the necessary amount of exercise.

Evidence reviewed by Public Health England has shown that more than 6.3 million adults aged 40 to 60 do not achieve ten minutes of continuous brisk walking over the course of a month, meaning they missing out on important health benefits.

This is an issue that has grown more prevalent over time, with people in the UK estimated to be 20 percent less active now than they were in the 1960s, while walking an average of 15 miles less a year than two decades ago.

The figures have been released to coincide with the launch of One You, a physical activity campaign that encourages adults to build ten minutes continuous brisk walking into their day as a simple way to improve their health.

A mobile app called Active 10 has been launched to help users to track their progress towards this goal, and to offer guidance on how to get more active.

Dr Jenny Harries, deputy medical director at Public Health England, said: "Walking to the shops instead of driving or going for a brisk ten-minute walk on your lunch break each day can add many healthy years to your life."
