SK Biosciences Granted Prequalification Certification from the World Health Organisation

28th February 2024

A biopharmaceutical firm, SK Bioscience, has been granted the prequalification certification by the World Health Organisation for their typhoid vaccination.

The WHO PQ system is a rigorous evaluation process conducted by the World Health Organization to assess and prequalify medicinal products, vaccines, and diagnostics, ensuring they meet international standards for quality, safety, and efficacy and facilitating their procurement by UN agencies and global health organizations.

The vaccine was created through a partnership with the International Vaccine Institute and was endorsed by the Bill and Melissa Gates Foundation.

The vaccination invokes a significant immune response in one dosage and is appropriate for infants ages six months to two years.

Dr Jerome Kim, the head executive of the International Vaccine Institute, commented, “Typhoid fever is more prevalent in warmer temperatures, and climate change and the worrying rise of antimicrobial resistance are only adding to the threat of the disease.”

Dr Kim went on to add, “Vaccination is critical to effective prevention and control of the disease. In collaboration with SK Bioscience and other partners, IVI will continue endeavours to make this vaccine accessible to people who need it the most.”
