Smith and Nephew announces takeover of Rotation Medical

27th October 2017

Smith and Nephew has announced the acquisition of the US-based medical technology company Rotation Medical.

The firm is a developer of a novel tissue regeneration technology for shoulder rotator cuff repair, incorporating a breakthrough technology and technique that balances biomechanics and biology to enhance the body's natural healing response.

Using this bioinductive implant, tendons are able to heal by inducing growth of new tendon-like tissue, thus helping to prevent tear progression and reduce the incidence of re-injury.

In clinical studies, the implant has demonstrated its effectiveness, improving clinical scores over time, with 92 percent of patients expressing their satisfaction post-treatment.

Smith and Nephew's chief executive Olivier Bohuon said: "Rotation Medical furthers our strategy to invest in disruptive technologies that accelerate the transformation of Smith and Nephew to higher growth."

The deal will see Smith and Nephew pay an initial cash consideration of $125 million (95.46 million pounds) and up to $85 million over the next five years, contingent on financial performance.
