Smith and Nephew launches MolecuLight i:X wound imaging device
Smith and Nephew has announced the launch of MolecuLight i:X, a new handheld imaging device designed to facilitate evidence-based decision-making in wound care.
Developed in collaboration with MolecuLight, the technology is designed to be easy to use, allowing clinicians to instantly measure the surface area of the wound and visualise the presence and distribution of potentially harmful bacteria.
Currently, wound assessments are made with the naked eye, but MolecuLight i:X uses fluorescence to get a more precise insight into the potential presence of bacteria in wounds that may otherwise lack signs or symptoms of infection.
Clinical studies have shown that wound assessments performed using the MolecuLight i:X as part of standard care facilitated more objective medical decision-making, resulting in wound healing that was up to nine times faster, with 54 percent more accurate swabbing.
Paolo Di Vincenzo, Smith and Nephew's senior vice-president for global marketing of wound products, said: "The MolecuLight i:X enables healthcare professionals to see what they have never been able to see before. We are proud to partner with MolecuLight and bring this innovative technology to our customers."
