Smith and Nephew previews Navio knee arthroplasty system at AAOS 2017

16th March 2017

Smith and Nephew has presented a preview of its Navio handheld robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty system ahead of its imminent market release.

The company is hosting hands-on demonstrations of the system for surgeons attending this week's annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), which is taking place in San Diego.

Navio provides consistent and accurate results through the utilisation of a surgeon-controlled robotics-assisted handpiece and specific cut guides, as well as versatile planning software offering precise implant alignment and ligament balance without the need for a preoperative CT scan.

This allows the surgeon to seamlessly plan for either a unicompartmental or total knee procedure at the time of surgery, while providing an intuitive and efficient workflow for the entire surgical team.

Dr Jimmy Chow, director of hip and joint orthopaedics at Phoenix St Luke's Medical Center, said: "I have experience with several robotic systems and my experience with the Navio Surgical System has been phenomenal."

The Navio system will have its full market release during the second quarter of 2017.
