Smith and Nephew report highlights 2009 sustainability achievements

Smith and Nephew has underlined its success in improving its sustainability and corporate responsibility standards in the last year.

The medical device company has published its tenth annual Sustainability Report for 2009, a year which saw the firm gain recognition via inclusion on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.

Among the achievements highlighted by Smith and Nephew were its contributions to healthcare through the launch of products such as Visionaire Patient Matched Instrumentation and the Dyonics RF Radiofrequency System, as well as its investments in medical education.

It also pointed to an increase in its charitable contributions and waste recycling efforts in the past 12 months.

David Illingworth, chief executive of Smith and Nephew, said: “We are proud that every day our products help to improve people’s lives and we also recognise that we have a wider responsibility to the community, the environment and society at large.”

In May 2010, the company published data from a study of its Birmingham Hip Resurfacing system, which demonstrated the device’s safety and longevity.
