Smith and Nephew unveils enhanced dressings from UK based division

19th May 2006

Smith and Nephew has revealed that it is launching “new and improved” Allevyn dressings from its advanced wound management division, based in Hull.

It says its Allevyn adhesive and Allevyn sacrum products can now handle an increase of fluid capacity of up to three times, while a new more breathable top film layer is a feature of the Allevyn adhesives.

The company says its Allevyn products aid healing by “maintaining an optimal moist wound environment” and reducing the risk of maceration – the softening of tissues through becoming too moist and susceptible to decomposition by bacteria.

Joe Woody, president of Smith and Nephew Advanced Wound Management, said: “2006 represents a very important year for Allevyn wound dressings and these improvements will help strengthen our position further as the leading global brand within the foam dressings market.”

“The enhanced products offer even more benefits to our customers and will continue to improve the quality of life of their patients,” he added.

Last month Smith and Nephew revealed its sales were slightly lower than expected during the first quarter and that the second quarter was likely to yield only a “modest improvement”. Sir Christopher O’Donnell, chief executive of Smith and Nephew, said that they had expected “tough market conditions”.

Smith and Nephew says it employs approximately 1,200 staff in its main advanced wound management factory in Hull. This accounts for around half of its advanced wound management staff. The company employs approximately 8,500 people in total in locations around the world.
