Smith and Nephew’s Allevyn Life shows benefits in preventing pressure ulcers

20th November 2017

Smith and Nephew has announced new clinical trial data offering further evidence of the benefits of its multi-layer polyurethane dressing Allevyn Life.

The study has shown that adding Allevyn Life to standard care protocol can significantly reduce the onset of pressure ulcers in elderly patients admitted to hospital for hip fracture, with 359 fragility hip fracture patients aged 65 or over involved in the trial.

It was demonstrated that 15.4 percent of patients receiving standard care developed a pressure ulcer, compared to only 4.5 percent of the group who received the same treatment with the addition of Allevyn Life.

This adds to the growing body of evidence showing the benefits of Allevyn Life, which helps to redistribute pressure and can be lifted and repositioned to allow regular skin inspections. It  has been designed following observational ethnographic research with patients and clinicians to address unmet needs in wound management.

Dr Andy Weymann, chief medical officer at Smith and Nephew, said: "This new research further demonstrates that Allevyn Life is a safe and effective preventative measure uniquely suited to be at the heart of a pressure ulcer prevention strategy."
