Smith and Nephew’s eCAP shown to reduce hospital readmission after joint surgery

19th January 2018

Smith and Nephew has announced the findings of a new study showing the practical benefits offered by its Episode of Care Assurance Programme (eCAP).

Results from the new study highlighted a 97.3 percent decrease in hospital readmission rates for joint arthroplasties conducted under eCAP, with 1,380 surgeries conducted under the programme over the past 14 months.

Working with US healthcare company Provider PPI, eCAP combines Smith and Nephew's leading hip and knee implants with its Pico Negative Pressure Wound Therapy and Acticoat Flex 7 Antimicrobial Barrier Dressings.

By applying these post-surgery, Pico helps protect the incision by reducing seroma and haematoma fluid collections, minimising oedema and lateral tension and improving perfusion, while Acticoat Flex 7 provides an effective barrier to microbial contamination.

Glenn Warner, president of Smith and Nephew, said: "eCAP can help enable providers to reduce costly readmissions after total joint arthroplasties by adding class-leading wound care products to help manage surgical incisions."

Smith and Nephew rolled out eCAP across Provider PPI's client facilities in late 2016 and is now serving 16 facilities across the US.
