Smith and Nephew’s Pico NPWT system shows benefits in trial

31st May 2012

Smith and Nephew has published new clinical data showing the benefits offered by its Pico negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) system.

Almost 200 Canadian patients were evaluated over a six-month period using the system, resulting in reduced healing times, higher conformability, increased comfort and greater ease of use compared to conventional NPWT devices.

The trial covered several types of wound, including surgical wounds and venous leg ulcers, with patients commending the Pico device on its quality of life benefits, particularly in terms of the size and discreteness of the system and the ease of dressing changes.

Meanwhile, clinicians found that the system allowed them to transition NPWT patients from acute care and keep them on the treatment for longer in a cost-effective way.

Andy Boyes, European president for the advanced wound management division of Smith and Nephew, said: "The innovation of Pico has expanded patient access to the benefits of NPWT through a single-use system and demonstrates our commitment to advancing woundcare technology."

This comes after the firm earlier this month completed its acquisition of Kalypto Medical, developer of the portable ambulatory NPWT system NPD 1000.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801376221-ADNFCR
