Sonos pauses social advertising and donates to digital rights group
Sonos has temporarily suspended all advertising on Facebook, Instagram, Google and Twitter this week, in response to some of the recent controversies surrounding big tech brands.
The consumer electronics firm, which specialises in smart speakers, said it will also make a donation to RightsCon, a digital rights conference created by campaign and advocacy group Access Now.
Sonos referred to the scandal involving Facebook and Cambridge Analytica as one of many concerning headlines that have come out of Silicon Valley recently.
In a blog post announcing its decision to pause social media advertising this week, the company said there are questions to be asked about whether the big tech sector is doing enough to balance its own interests with the privacy rights of users.
Sonos said it continues to believe in the power of technology to "bring us together and to create deeper, shared experiences", but there is "plenty of room for evolution".
"Now is the time to have the hard discussions and to support those who drive things forward in an effort to make us all better technologists and more educated consumers of technology," the company added.
