SonoSite to buy Visualsonics

1st June 2010

SonoSite has agreed a deal to purchase ultra high-frequency micro-ultrasound technology specialist Visualsonics for around $71 million (49.1 million pounds).

The newly-acquired company has been in existence since 1999 and provides the pre-clinical research market with devices that allow for detailed scanning of superficial anatomy.

It has worked with a number of pharmaceutical companies and educational facilities across the world in the last ten years and has assisted research into areas such as cardiovascular health, cancer and developmental growth.

SonoSite hopes that the deal, which is expected to conclude within 30 days, will help it to expand its own presence in the pre-clinical market, a sector with a double-digit projected annualised growth rate.

Kevin Goodwin, SonoSite president and chief executive officer, said: “Our intention is to integrate Visualsonics’ micro-ultrasound technology with SonoSite’s miniaturisation competency and user design to deliver ultra high-frequency micro-ultrasound into clinical medicine.”

This comes after SonoSite announced last month that it will be working together with Physio-Control in the coming months to develop and launch new ultrasound devices for the emergency medical services sector.
