St Jude Medical receives EU approval for Asian production site

27th January 2011

St Jude Medical has received EU approval to manufacture key medical device components at its new production facility in Malaysia.

The company has been granted CE marking for the manufacturing of pacemakers and leads at the site on Penang Island, which spans more than 300,000 sq ft and will employ around 260 staff members by the end of the year.

Initially, the state-of-the-art facility will be used to produce devices for the cardiac rhythm management market, with further expansion of its capabilities taking place gradually to encompass other St Jude business units.

The first wave of products to be constructed at the site has already been shipped out to the company's European distribution centre in Veddesta, Sweden.

Daniel Starks, chairman, president and chief executive officer of St Jude Medical, said: "By expanding our global footprint, we have created a sustainable competitive advantage that will help us to provide our lifesaving technologies to even more patients and customers."

Last week, the company announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2010, reporting a 12 percent year-on-year sales growth.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800368697-ADNFCR
