St Jude Medical’s Proclaim Elite system approved for use with MRI

9th December 2016

St Jude Medical has announced that users of its Proclaim Elite spinal cord stimulation (SCS) system can now undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.

The company has received European CE mark approval for full-body magnetic resonance conditional labelling of Proclaim Elite, allowing patients who receive the SCS system to undergo full-body MRI diagnostic scans within approved parameters.

SCS therapy can offer many patients meaningful pain relief and improvements in quality of life, yet the potential need for future MRI scans can often act as a barrier to SCS therapy – a state of affairs this technology can help to remedy.

The device previously received MR conditional labelling for head and extremity MRI scans in 2015.

Dr Allen Burton, medical director of neuromodulation and vice-president of medical affairs at St Jude Medical, said: "Our new labelling for the Proclaim Elite SCS System ensures that patients can receive the treatment they need, while having peace of mind knowing their SCS system can be safely scanned with the diagnostic imaging they require."
