Start4Life campaign launched

5th January 2010

The government has launched its Start4Life initiative, which it states will offer support and advice to pregnant women and also help people to give their families a helping hand when it comes to leading healthier lives.

Centred on six key points, or “building blocks”, the campaign is part of Change4Life, which aims to help people to eat well, increase their mobility and live for longer.

The building blocks include outlining why breast milk is the best option for both mother and baby, tips on how to avoid giving children a sweet tooth and cut down on sugar snacks and guidance on why it is important for kids to be active.

Public health minister Gillian Merron stated: “What happens in the first years of a baby’s life has a big effect on how healthy they are in the future.”

Ms Merron, who is the Labour MP for Lincoln, concluded by noting that obesity levels are still too high and that more work needs to be done to improve children’s health.
