STFC to be subject to ministerial review

8th March 2010

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is to be the subject of new government arrangements designed to help it to function in a more efficient and stable manner.

Science minister Lord Drayson has outlined plans to improve STFC’s management of factors such as international subscriptions and planning and budgeting for large UK facilities.

It is hoped that such changes will remove organisational uncertainty and help to prevent the body’s activities from being unexpectedly affected by issues such as fluctuations in currency exchange rates.

STFC chairman professor Michael Sterling expressed confidence that this review will help it to address “structural issues” and deliver beneficial science and technology developments to the UK.

He said: “The minister’s decisions will enable STFC to move forward with greater financial confidence, removing the risk of foreign exchange impacts and securing a longer term funding arrangement for our big science facilities.”

This month, the body published research on a new means of nuclear physics-based medical imaging it is helping to develop, which is intended to allow for easier and quicker detection of tumours.
