Stroke awareness campaign Act FAST returns for 2017
Public Health England has announced the return of Act FAST, its annual campaign designed to raise awareness of the main symptoms of stroke.
To mark the 2017 campaign, promotional films will be launched encouraging people to immediately call 999 when they suspect someone near to them may be experiencing a stroke.
Telltale signs of a stroke include the face falling on one side and an inability to smile, as well as difficulty in raising and holding their arms in a stable position. Slurred speech is another key symptom.
According to official research, 24 percent of people say they would wait to call an ambulance due to an incorrect belief that they need to see two or more symptoms of stroke to be sure, while others are held back by a feeling that they need permission to act on behalf of others.
Professor Kevin Fenton, Public Health England's national director for health and wellbeing, said: "Stroke is one of the leading causes of death in the country, and the faster someone experiencing a stroke gets emergency treatment, the more chance that person has of surviving and avoiding serious disability."
