Sudden death from silent heart conditions ‘threatens thousands’
Up to 620,000 people in the UK may be at high risk of sudden death due to silent heart conditions, according to a new report.
Data from the British Heart Foundation has indicated that 620,000 people in the UK are carrying a faulty gene putting them at risk of sudden death from a cardiac arrest or heart attack, with no obvious cause or explanation.
Indeed, this figure could in fact be underestimated, as such problems are currently underdiagnosed, while many genes that can increase a person's risk of these potentially fatal conditions may not have been discovered yet.
Deadly silent heart conditions can affect people of any age, and children of those with a genetically-founded heart condition have a 50 per cent chance of inheriting it.
Professor Sir Nilesh Samani, medical director of the British Heart Foundation, said: "If undetected and untreated, inherited heart conditions can be deadly and they continue to devastate families, often by taking away loved ones without warning."
