Suicide ‘more prevalent in some occupations than others’

22nd March 2017

Suicide rates are higher in some professions than others, according to new data published by Public Health England.

The analysis, conducted by the Office for National Statistics, marks the first time that national suicide rates have been broken down by occupation in England, with the aim of gaining a better understanding of factors that influence the trend.

It was shown that suicide is more common in men than women, with low-skilled male labourers in construction three times more likely to take their own lives than the average for England. Men working in skilled construction jobs also had an increased risk.

Meanwhile, for women, occupations with a high risk of suicide include nurses, primary school teachers and those working in culture, media and sport. Meanwhile, both male and female care workers had a risk of suicide that was almost twice the national average.

Duncan Selbie, chief executive of Public Health England, said: "I urge all employers, large or small, public or private sector to treat mental health as seriously as physical health. Early action can stop any employees reaching a desperate stage."
