Summer hay fever spike ‘leading to rise in GP appointments’

4th July 2017

GP services in England are coming under pressure due to the unusually higher number of hay fever cases that have arisen this summer.

This is according to new data from the Royal College of GPs (RCGP), which has indicated that the number of patients seeing their GP for hay fever-type symptoms since the start of June have more than tripled from 11,353 to 37,568 in England.

By comparison, this figure came to only 25,097 at the same point last year, which was a lower total than average. School-age children are most likely to be affected, with this age group also most likely to visit a GP with their symptoms – rather than using an over-the-counter medicine.

The RCGP suggested the recent hot weather is responsible for this trend, which is problematic for GPs due to the additional time they have to spend dealing with patients whose conditions can be easily self-managed. This means those with more serious conditions may end up losing out.

Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, chair of the RCGP, said: "Whilst in some cases it may be necessary to see a doctor, especially if the symptoms persist, there are many antihistamine medications that can be bought over the counter inexpensively at your pharmacist that should provide effective relief."
