Survey suggests children do not exercise enough

27th April 2009

Children are not getting as much exercise as they should, it has been claimed.

Minister for public health Dawn Primarolo made this comment after a Change4Life survey found 72 per cent of youngsters do not get an hour of physical activity outside of school every day.

The research also discovered 22 per cent of children did something active in the evening, compared to 45 per cent who watched television or played video games first thing in the morning.

Ms Primarolo said youngsters need to get 60 minutes of exercise daily if obesity levels are going to be cut.

“By eating better and moving more, we can all live longer and healthier lives,” she remarked.

A Change4Life advertising campaign has started which Ms Primarolo remarked would encourage families to “feel the difference”.

Last week, the Department of Health announced a new National Support Team would visit 43 areas across the country to try and tackle the problem of infant mortality.

It would be addressing issues regarding smoking, maternal obesity, teenage pregnancy and child poverty.
