Swine flu latest: Don’t panic, says health secretary

27th July 2009

Health secretary Andy Burnham has urged the public to remain calm about the spread of swine flu in the UK.

He explained that an exaggerated public panic would put unnecessary strain on the National Health Service and explained the government was well prepared for the virus.

“It is very important for everybody to keep a sense of perspective,” Mr Burnham told the Observer newspaper.

“It has been a mild virus in the vast majority of cases, with relatively mild symptoms from which people recover fully fairly quickly.”

The health minister’s comments come before expected criticism of the government’s handling of the disease.

A House of Lords report is anticipated to attack ministers for failing to adhere to their own timetable for pandemic response.

A national swine flu helpline was set up last Thursday but Whitehall sources indicate peers will bemoan a perceived slow reaction to the pandemic from the Department of Health.
