Tecan launches updated Spark multimode microplate reader

Tecan has announced the launch of a new, upgraded version of its Spark microplate reader.

The system combines the capabilities of a multimode microplate reader with those of a bright field imaging system in a single, compact package, optimised for cost-effective automation of live cell assay processes.

It is able to address the needs of cell-based workflows with the aid of features such as the precise regulation of temperature, gas partial pressures and humidity, while also offering an incubator-like environment to maintain optimal assay conditions. 

Spark's Live Viewer function allows the reader to function as an automated microscope, while the cell imaging module offers high-throughput, label-free cell counting and one-click, trypan blue-based cell viability analysis.

The company said: "Unlike other multimode readers, Spark lets you actually see what's happening to your cells, offering automated cell imaging, confluence measurements, cell counting and viability assessments to simplify cell biology protocols and enable long-term, walkaway experiments."
