Thermo acquires Affinity

21st July 2008

Thermo Fisher Scientific has bought out a leading provider of antibodies, peptides, proteins and other life science reagents.

According to the firm, it has completed the takeover of Affinity BioReagents based in Golden, Colorado.

Marijn Dekkers, president and chief executive of Thermo Fisher Scientific, said the US company is an ideal compliment to its existing protein research capabilities.

"This acquisition enhances our extensive antibody portfolio, which will drive growth as we combine these reagents with our current proteomics offerings to create end-to-end solutions for widely used protein-research applications," he added.

Affinity brings with it more than 35,000 reagents – mainly monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies – used in numerous fields of medical and academic research and drug discovery.

Thermo Fisher claims Affinity enjoyed annual revenue of some six million dollars (three million pounds) in 2007.

It recently announced it was integrating its mass spectrometry instrumentation with Genedata Expressionist to accelerate metabolomics research.
