Thermo Fisher Opens cGMP Production Location as Part of UCSF Collaboration

11th April 2023

Thermo Fisher Scientific has recently unveiled a new cGMP production location in a bid to speed up the development of revolutionary cell treatments for health problems that are not easily controlled or detected, such as rare diseases and cancer.

Thermo Fisher and UCSF’s collaboration, which first came to light back in 2021, may show how putting researchers, doctors, and patients near to a manufacturing facility can hasten the production of ground-breaking medicines.

Thermo’s EVP and COO, Michel Lagarde, explained that “cell therapies represent a rapidly emerging field of biotechnology with tremendous promise for future therapeutic applications. We’re in a golden age of biology, where new technologies and partnerships are evolving and transforming clinical care.”

Thermo Fisher’s international pharma services connections include over 15 facilities that offer cell and gene treatments, with the San Francisco plant being one of them.

Sam Hawgood, Chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco, said that his institution is “one of the top clinical sites for CAR-T treatment, and our scientists are leading the next-generation of CAR-T therapy development.”
