Thermo Fisher Scientific acquires Finnzymes

Thermo Fisher Scientific has completed its takeover of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) process specialist Finnzymes.

The science company has finalised the previously-agreed takeover in a move which will see it incorporate a business which generated full year revenues of $20 million (13.4 million pounds) in 2009.

Finnzymes has been acquired in order to capitalise on its expertise in providing integrated tools for high-performance PCR processes, which include reagents, instruments and consumables.

Thermo Fisher has identified these tools as offering potential advantages in the fields of genomic research, forensics and genetic testing, as they will help to make the PCR process faster and more accurate.

As such, the business will now be incorporated into Thermo Fisher’s analytical technologies segment, although certain products will become part of its laboratory products and services unit instead.

This comes after the firm last month completed its acquisition of Ahura Scientific, which specialises in handheld Raman and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy instruments.
