Thermo Fisher Scientific creates manufacturing site for Flexion Therapeutics

Thermo Fisher Scientific has announced the commencement of manufacturing of a new drug for Flexion Therapeutics at a custom-designed site in the UK.

The condo-style manufacturing suite has been installed at Thermo Fisher Scientific's Swindon location to support the launch of Flexion's US-approved therapy Zilretta, which is designed for the treatment of osteoarthritis-related knee pain.

Utilising the Patheon custom manufacturing solution, the site environment has been optimised for complex formulations, allowing Flexion to benefit from a manufacturing runway spanning the entire process from development to commercialisation.

The facility can operate as needed to meet supply requirements, with high-cost capital and operating expense functions shared between the two companies. This has allowed Flexion to rapidly ramp up the pace of its manufacturing to meet demand.
