Thermo Fisher Scientific launches new Applied Biosystems Axiom Africa Array

20th October 2017

Thermo Fisher Scientific has announced the launch of a new medical and population genomics solution, the Applied Biosystems Axiom Africa Array.

The array was developed in partnership with the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, and allows genome-wide variations to be captured in African populations, as well as Asian and European demographics.

Created to accelerate and support initiatives in global health and population research, the array is based on a whole-genome sequencing effort of 4,956 individuals from populations in Africa to create the African Genome Resources haplotype reference panel.

As such, it is able to tag at least 90 percent of common genetic variation in 12 diverse African populations, including pre-selected evidence-based genetic variants important in the context of disease research and pharmacogenomics in global populations.

Dr Laurent Bellon, vice-president and general manager for Thermo Fisher Scientific's microarray business, said: "We pride ourselves on being the platform of choice to support global medical and population research initiatives that aim to understand genetic risk factors for disease development and on contributing to advancements in medical research for millions of individuals."
