Thermo Fisher Scientific launches new Axiom Microbiome Array

27th February 2018

Thermo Fisher Scientific has announced the launch of its new Applied Biosystems Axiom Microbiome Array for research applications.

The new array is designed for the simultaneous detection of archaea, bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses in human and non-human samples, and was developed in collaboration with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

It has been designed to increase the understanding of microorganisms, incorporating sequences for more than 12,595 species included in the US National Center for Biotechnology Information archive. As such, it allows for the simultaneous detection of protozoa and viruses with significant ease of analysis.

Shantanu Kaushikkar, director of Thermo Fisher Scientific's genotyping and agrigenomics microarray platform, said: "This solution helps address several of the challenges associated with detection and insight into the human microbiome, which plays a key role in human health and disease."

The Axiom Microbiome Array was included in a pilot to determine a sample collection protocol in a wider UK Biobank participant collection programme, and was recently presented with an R&D 100 Award.
