Thermo Fisher Scientific launches new bacterial infection test

26th January 2016

Thermo Fisher Scientific has announced the European launch of its new BRAHMS PCT Testing Solution for sepsis diagnosis and antibiotic stewardship applications.

Developed for the Samsung IB10 Point-of-Care Platform, the biomarker assay has received European CE Mark approval and represents the first product to be co-developed as part of a strategic collaboration with Samsung Electronics.

Procalcitonin (PCT) assays represent a high-quality option for the reliable and early detection of bacterial infections based on standardised cutoffs. This new test can provided results in 20 minutes, as well as outstanding portability and connectivity.

It can be used to detect and diagnose clinically relevant bacterial infections, assess the degree of severity and forecast the outcome of cases of systemic bacterial infection, sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock.

Marc Tremblay, president of Thermo Fisher's clinical diagnostics business, said: "With the addition of this new test, we will significantly improve our ability to make PCT testing available to a broader patient population in Europe, particularly for point-of-care diagnostics."

This follows the launch of the company's SureTect Escherichia coli O157:H7 assay for the detection of food pathogens earlier this month.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801811022-ADNFCR
